E-bike myths: What's really true?

"Only for lazy people and the elderly," "far too expensive," or "far too heavy"—e-bikes are still battling persistent prejudices. Yet current figures show that in 2024, more e-bikes were sold than regular bikes. It's time to fact-check the most common e-bike myths.

Myth 1: "E-bikes are only for old and lazy people."

(Quelle: Bike-X)

Myth 2: "Riding an e-bike does nothing for your fitness."

The reality: A study by Hannover Medical School shows that e-bike riders spent 135 minutes per week on the road, enabling them to achieve two-thirds of the WHO's exercise target of 150 minutes of moderate activity. The cardiovascular system was challenged almost as intensively as with conventional cycling – reducing the risk of heart attack by over 40 percent.

People who ride e-bikes are more physically active because they are more likely to cycle to work or to the shops than to drive. E-bikes are also easy on the joints: for people with joint problems such as osteoarthritis, e-bikes can be beneficial as continuous pedaling strengthens the leg muscles while protecting the joints. We have already addressed this myth in detail. Here you will find 5 reasons why riding an e-bike is more of a workout than you might think..

Myth 3: "E-bikes are far too heavy and unwieldy."

The reality: Modern e-bikes have become significantly lighter. Focus Mobility reports: "E-bikes weighing less than 20 kg are no longer a utopian dream." (Source: Focus Mobility)

The difference in weight is mainly noticeable when carrying the bike – when riding, it is hardly noticeable, if at all. Lightweight e-bikes even offer advantages for seniors or people with limited mobility: "A lightweight e-bike is easier to maneuver and easier to control when riding slowly." (Source: Focus Mobility)

Myth 4: "E-bikes are overpriced and not worth the money."

Myth 5: "The range is far too short."

  • Optimaler Reifendruck

  • Vorausschauend fahren

  • Unnötiges Gewicht vermeiden

  • Akku bei Kälte warm halten

Conclusion: Modern e-bikes impress with facts

E-bikes have evolved from a niche product to a mainstream means of transportation. The German newspaper taz summarizes: "E-bikes are replacing cars more often than bikes" – so they are not a replacement for normal bikes, but an alternative to cars.

In 2024, more e-bikes (2.0 million) were sold than regular bikes (1.8 million) for the first time. These figures speak for themselves: the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages. (Source: Ernst & Young)
